Listen to two students talking about lectures and seminars at university, and fill the gaps in the summaries below.
Note:
Don't worry if you have to listen several times to get the answers. This is an exercise that I made myself, not a real IELTS question.
Student A

I have a reading question from Cambridge 11 test1..
question is= "some damage to food crops is caused by climate change"
passage = "however, more often than not now, due to rapidity changing climate, this is not what happens.Massive floods, long drought, hurricanes and severe monsoons take their toll each year, destroying millions of tons of valuable crops.
the given answer is 'true'. but how it could be? I gave it 'false'
let me know about 'some'.
is 'some' equal to "take their toll each year or "destroying millions of tons of valuable crops.
I'm being confused to see the use of 'some' many times.

Hi Simon,
How would a date be written in the IELTS Listening answer sheet?
If the speaker said '22nd October', would it be wrong to write 22 October as the answer.
Thank you,
Anne Marie

The speed and the accent make it more difficult to have correct answers. It is a challenge! Thank you Simon!

Hi Anne Marie
On the sample answer sheet below (provided by the British Council), there are alternatives separated by slashes, and optional words in brackets. My understanding is that optional words, if used, must be spelt correctly, so that "foreign student" for 2/17 would be wrong.
https://takeielts.britishcouncil.org/sites/default/files/2018-01/Listening_practice_answers_121012.doc_.pdf
British format = 22nd October
American format = October 22
"22 October" is also used in books so should be fine.

@fuad
"some damage to food crops is caused by climate change". What are the alternatives?
"Damage to ...": would suggest all damage.
"The damage ...": again, would suggest "all".
"Most damage": would suggest more than "over half". That would mean more than the damage caused by pests, pesticides, poor soils, soil deficiencies, insufficient fertilizer, issues with irrigation,salinization and defective seeds, planting techniques, and human interference by war and the like. So hard to know....
"Some damage" has, in my view, been used simply to indicate "some, but not all" - an unspecified amount.
"A great deal of damage": this would be a good alternative.

It's not easy to hear the word "lecturers". That may be a question for band 9 :))

The way that you taught in a university is quite different from six???? because and colleges and things like that . because you basically have a few lectures and the use that seminars and lectures are usually your how course meeting up and just receiving one of the lectures on a particular topic. And a seminar where you meet the small groups, you have to kind of a discuss the range of ideas you heard about in your lecture and to just go through things more in detail. So you get a better idea for what the courses about.
At university, your timetable will consist of a mixture of lectures and small group teaching which are also in a seminar. Depending on your course, the number of people in lectures may vary. For my course, we have about 400 people in a big lecture theater. In a small group seminar, again depending on your departments, it varies between 10 people to about 20.
This is what I write a script from the dialog. However, Student A was difficult more than student B and I wonder what she said about "S word" on the first sentence. Is anyone figure out this?
