Hi Simon,

I think the problem in the sentence is that it loosely described the figures, to the point that it lacks exactness and accuracy of details, or in other words it is imprecise. Moreover, it plainly stated the figures as it was in the table. To describe percentage, it is better to use the language of fractions, such as a quarter, two of thirds, a fraction etc...

In 2012, the percentage of people using text message was 95 percent, compared to 52 percent of email users.

In 2012, most of people was used text message instead of email for communication.

FROM SIMON:

I'm glad it's clear that you can't say "text message was 95%". Of course, 95% refers to the proportion of PEOPLE who communicated by text message. So, we could write something easy like:

In 2012, 95% of people communicated by text message, while only 52% used email.

In terms of two forms of communication in 2012.
Text message and Email account for 95%and 52%respectively.

Hi i have a doubt. We calculate percentage in 100. Is it ? If 95% of people use text message for communication , the remaining would be only 5%. Am I right or not?

95% of communication methods were made via text message, while the figure for sending emails was 52% in 2012.

Acccording to the survey which took place In the year 2012, the most common form of communication was text messages. which is visible from the table as 95% of people communicated via text messaGe while only 52% people used emails for communication.

We can also write this, right?

A large proportion of people texted message in the communication with around 95% in 2012, these numbers were almost more than half of email users( approximately 52%).

@ Lhtt Thanh Truc

"the number of people who communicate over text message accounted for approximately 95%":
interestingly, if you put "number of people accounted for" into books.google.com, this phrase hardly comes up.

Looking at: https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/account_for

the example is given: "German speakers accounted for 37% of the population".
This might make it possible to say:
"Text message users accounted for 95% of the population".

"used text messaging" seems to be the phrase (not used text message).

@Peter:
"the rate of text message users doubled the percentage of email users ":

Using "double" as a transitive verb to mean " Amount to twice as much as" is marked archaic here: https://en.oxforddictionaries.com/definition/double

In contrast, "double" as a verb meaning "to increase something so that it is twice as big, twice as much, or twice as many" seems to be perfectly normal.

@ suminda:
"... communication while, 52% used emails...":

the comma would come before (not after).

the comma would come before (not after) "while".

"used emails" is seldom used in comparison with "used email": this is because "email" is also an uncountable noun meaning "a system for transferring messages from one computer to another, usually via a network".

https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/email#Noun

For the form od communication in 2012, 95 per cent of surveyed people chose text message, compared to roughly half of counterpart prefer sending Email.

@Wilson:
https://books.google.com/ngrams/graph?content=surveyed+people%2Cpeople+surveyed%2Cthose+surveyed&year_start=1960&year_end=2008&corpus=15&smoothing=3&share=&direct_url=t1%3B%2Csurveyed%20people%3B%2Cc0%3B.t1%3B%2Cpeople%20surveyed%3B%2Cc0%3B.t1%3B%2Cthose%20surveyed%3B%2Cc0

I don't see that "counterpart" fits the context, as we are still talking about the same sample group.

https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/counterpart

My take on the data table is that it is not about how many times people used texting or email; it is whether they used it at all. So I think that rather than "chose" or "prefer", "made use of" is a more apt phrase. In the detail paragraph this would give us something like :

95 per cent of those surveyed made use of text messaging, almost double the number (52%) who used email.

In the overview (without percentages):

In 2012, text messaging was almost universal, whereas emailing was far less widespread.

@Sara:
"Acccording to the survey ..." Simon has only once written something like this for Task 1. If the introduction explains what the survey is about, there should be little need to keep on referencing it.

" which took place " - superfluous.

"in the year 2012": try googling this, and notice that the context is often mystical or religious: "in 2012" is commoner and more straightforward.

"the most common form of communication was": this suggests frequency or volume rather than the number of people.

"communication/communicated": repetition three times in one sentence.

"text messages. which is " - should be comma.

"visible from the table": not a phrase Simon has used in Task 1.

Hi Simon,

Thank you for your site. However, I have one problem with word "PLUS".

May I use this word in a sentence like an addition preposition.
Ex: The information has been updated to their system. Plus, please be noticed that this shipment has 14 days free time.

Thank you a lot!

thanks to simon

In the year 2012, the proportion of people communicated over text message accounted for 95%, while the figure for email was just over 50%.

In the year 2012, 95% people communicated through message whereas, 52% people used to email as an online form of communication

@ sujit

Misplaced comma; it comes before "whereas" and after "however".

http://ielts-simon.com/ielts-help-and-english-pr/2010/11/ielts-grammar-however-and-whereas.html

The proportion to text message use is 95% in 2012 while email only accounts for 52%.

In the year of 2012, the percentage of individuals using text message accounted for 95%, while that figure of people using email was only 52%.

In 2012, nearly everybody used text messages to communicate, while the number of people who used email services was about half of population.

Hi Simon,

Is that ok to use 'only' for the number 52 as it is not that small?

In 2012, only one out of twenty people did not make contact through text messages; however, the proportion of email users accounted for just above the 50% level.

@Phuc

@Phuc

The only example of "proportion of (email) users accounted ...." I could find was:

"the proportion of (drug) users accounted for by this group has fallen."

"users accounted for" (without starting off with "the proportion of") is more common:

https://books.google.com/ngrams/graph?content=+users+accounted+for&year_start=1960&year_end=2008&corpus=15&smoothing=3&share=&direct_url=t1%3B%2Cusers%20accounted%20for%3B%2Cc0

"for just above the 50% level." -> for just over 50%.

in 2012, the percentage of people who used text message form is 95% and the email is 52%

In 2012, 95% people communicated through text messages while 52% individuals used email to communicate.

FrancoC :

https://books.google.com/ngrams/graph?content=95+%25+people%2C95+%25+of+people%2C2+%25+of+patients%2C2+%25+patients&year_start=1960&year_end=2008&corpus=15&smoothing=3&share=&direct_url=t1%3B%2C95%20%25%20people%3B%2Cc0%3B.t1%3B%2C95%20%25%20of%20people%3B%2Cc0%3B.t1%3B%2C2%20%25%20of%20patients%3B%2Cc0%3B.t1%3B%2C2%20%25%20patients%3B%2Cc0

To avoid repetition we can leave out the second "people/individuals" and "communicate", especially if we add "only" where appropriate:

In 2012, 95% of people communicated through text messages while only 52% individuals used email to communicate.

Although there are often key topic words from the question that need to be repeated for cohesion, in general repetition needs to be avoided.

https://www.swooshenglish.com/article-8-substitution-and-avoiding-repetition-2/

Thao:

" text message form" -> text messaging

Mina:

A) "In 2012, nearly everybody used text messages to communicate, while the number of people who used email services was about half of population."
->
B) In 2012, nearly everybody used text messaging, while those using email made up only about half the population.
OR
C) In 2012, nearly everybody used text messaging, while only about half used email.

Version C is more idiomatic and uses a lot of ellipsis (leaving out words to avoid repetition) .

as FrancoC mentioned :

In 2012, most of people communicated over text messages about 95%, while only 52% used email.

@heyam
