Read the following passage and choose the best heading.
The environmental challenges posed by agriculture are huge, and they’ll only become more pressing as we try to meet the growing need for food worldwide. We’ll likely have two billion more mouths to feed by mid-century - more than nine billion people. But sheer population growth isn’t the only reason we’ll need more food. The spread of prosperity across the world, especially in India and China, is driving an increased demand for meat, eggs and dairy, boosting pressure to grow more corn and soybeans to feed more cattle, pigs and chickens. If these trends continue, the double whammy of population growth and richer diets will require us to roughly double the amount of crops we grow by 2050.

Hi simon and folks,
I'm off topic, but I'll ask it anyway.
What's the difference between 'at' 50% and 'with' 50%?
The price rose (at/with) 50%.
I read it on a website, 'with' is used for the highest figure, while 'at' for any rate. Is this correct?
Thank you

Any reasons?
We want to know
How you can rule out (. B. )?
Explain please,
Posted by: Bee | February 02, 2016 at 12:19
Hi Bee,
My explanation is this. We agree that we have to choose the BEST heading. This does not mean that the other two headings are TOTALLY wrong. There is just one reference to the environment in the passage, which is MAINLY about the two reasons why there is an increasing demand for food.
I hope this helps.
Posted by: pete walton | February 02, 2016 at 18:26
@ Pete Walton
No help at all because the first sentence of each paragraph contains the main idea, which is the main idea here and exactly mentioned in the question (B )
.
.
Posted by: Bee | February 02, 2016 at 20:26
Hi Bee,
It is great that you are giving a lot of thought to this question. The first sentence also refers to 'the growing need for food worldwide'. Possible answer A mentions 'driving the demand for food worldwide'.
As a result, I do not think that we can take the word 'environmental'and the word 'agriculture' on their own to argue for B as the best answer. We have to now consider the passage as a whole.
Posted by: pete walton | February 02, 2016 at 20:43
Hi Pete Walton
Ok
Thanks
U r right and I have no doubt that mr simon is 100 % correct,
But I am confused.com
Hahaha
Posted by: Bee | February 02, 2016 at 21:11
OK Bee,
Remember that the passage chosen by Simon was very useful, but it did not come from an IELTS past test paper, so don't worry.
Your technique of paying special attention to the first sentence of the paragraph is not wrong. It is just that in this particular passage, this first sentence left us with more than one possibility. When this is the case, we have to consider the passage as a whole.
If you continue to study in the same thoughtful way, I am sure that you will continue to make good progress.
