I have a question about this sentence and the using of (having) in it; London underground system is the oldest system, having opened in 1863.

John Dewey was America’s foremost philosopher and philosopher of education. His ideas are important to education today because he recognized that each individual brings a certain context and history to his or her learning. He also understood the importance of learning in a group or individually, learning from others that are unlike you. The essence of democracy is that you have different voices and you learn from each of them, and Dewey celebrated that. He would probably be quite critical of the current system of education because it ignores the teaching context and what each student brings to the classroom.

John Dewey was an America's foremost philosopher and philosopher of education. His ideas are important to education today because we still have not gotten a sense of the importance of learning individually.
And individual student brings a certain context and history to his and her learning and the teacher must know that Dewey recognize that.
At the same time Dewey recognize importance of learning in a group or community, learning from others, learning from others that are unlike you. That's a essence of a democracy as you have many different voices and you learn form those people, and Dewey celebrated that.
I think Dewey would be quite critical of the standard and assessment movement that we have in this country and how it ignores the contexts of teaching and ignores what students bring to the classroom.

Laxmi,
I suppose the speaker decided to use the plural to highlight the fact that there are many different contexts. However, the singular "context" would also be correct, and the meaning would be the same.
