Here is my answer:

There was an increase in the number of female university entrants, with figure reaching 20,000 over the 9-year period.

There was a significant rise in the number of male university entrants, with figure peaking at 157,000 in 2011.

I am not sure how to write the similar way on the first sentence because there is no figure only years.
