Here are my answers:

Here is what I learnt:
you don't get something for nothing = you don't get something for free
handouts: something given free to you, you don't have to pay for it
instill somebody with something: make somebody think or behave in a particular way

make them stretch = push themselves harder, assign them harder jobs so that they can develop as many as their potentials and abilities.
