Could you help me to explain why we need to add "s" at the end of word " figure" of the two below sentences. I think that this is one data as the percentage of the elderly in Japan . The proportions of = the proportion of the USA and the proportion of Sweden so this is why a word proportion was added "s".
" The proportions of elderly people in the USA and Sweden rose gradually over the next 50 years, reaching just under 15% in 1990. By contrast, the figures for Japan remained below 5% until the early 2000s".
I'm still confused when we need to add "s". I looked at some of your essay but i cannot figure out the rule. Please help me.

ANSWERS FROM SIMON:

1. I would prefer to use "prices" instead of "cost" and the verb "fluctuate" instead of the noun "fluctuations". We also need to change the words "these years". For example:

The prices of food and oil fluctuated considerably over the period shown.

2. We need to change the phrase "have a significant increase in eleven years".

The prices of both food and oil increased significantly over the 11-year period.

3. It's strange to use the phrase "almost similar". Either write "similar" or "almost the same". Also, I would either write about the trend OR about the figures, not both. For example:

- The figures for food and oil prices were similar throughout the period shown.
OR:
- Food and oil prices followed similar trends throughout the period shown.

4. "nearly same trends within period" is wrong. Use one of the sentences that I wrote for number 3 above.

5. "goods increased theirs prices" is wrong. Here's my corrected version:

The price of both goods increased over the period shown.

6. "had their prices increased" is wrong. Use my answer to number 5 above.

Thanks Anh. Happy Easter!

Thanks, Teacher Simon!
I had one of the best Easter vacations with my extended family yesterday! We all had a whale of a time! I hope so did you and your family^.^ <3 <3

I have some questions about your answers, Teacher Simon.
1) Why did you prefer to use" price" to "cost" , and the verb "fluctuate" to the noun "fluctuation"?
2) Should we use "the prices of food and oil" or" the price of food and oil"? Or are they both correct?
At first, I was confused why you said it wasn't normal to use "almost similar", then I looked the word "similar" up and I figured out: "similar" means "like somebody/ something but not exactly the same", so "similar" is enough, not "nearly similar". I was really happy to realize that!

Thanks a lot, Teacher Simon. I have been looking into your answers for almost one hour and I have learnt a lot from them. Now I am so happy because I can learn more for today!

Thanks Simon!
Your answers are really inspiring!

May I say"The prices of both food and oil increased significantly over the 11-year period, following similar trends"?

Thanks for your kind clarification.

Hi Anh,

1) It's better to talk about "oil price", "price of oil", "food prices" etc. These are the normal collocations that we use in this context.

Although "price" and "cost" are often used in the same way in everyday English, they are seen as different concepts in the world of business. So, the "cost of oil" tends to refer to production costs, rather than the price for the buyer. Put "price vs cost" into Google to read more about this.

I suppose this is why it seems more natural to me to use "price".

2) Price and prices are both correct.

I'm glad you learnt how to use "similar" from the lesson too!

...

Hi Jingyi,

Yes, that would be fine too.

Hello Nam Anh,
I see that you're a very active person interacting with the lessons.
It appears that you are learning IE extensively.
I wonder which grade you are in VN?
Thanks.

Dear Teacher Simon,
Thank you so much. I have fully understood now!

Dear Jack Aleica,
I am in grade 12 now, I am 18 years old.
Thanks a lot for your compliments!

Hi Nam Anh,

Great to meet you.
I'm 25 years old.
May I get your fb or skype for talking and learning more about IELTS ?

Best,

Hi Jack Aleica,
I do have a FB account but I found myself getting quite distracted, so I have closed it temporarily. In terms of Skype account, my dad doesn't allow me to use it or any other similar apps because he's worried that I will have a boyfriend and end up getting distracted from studying. I am so sorry. I hope you will find another nice friend soon and have great time talking about Ielts.

Hi Nam Anh,
No problem ^^. In fact, I don't use social network very often. Almost spare time I spend on learning English on the internet, including Simon's website. It's really useful. I completely agree that young students should highly focus on their education instead of getting bf or gf.
A well-educated gal is exactly attractive in my point of view.
At last, enjoy learning. :)

Thank you, Jack!! I wish you best luck for your Ielts exam!!! May you have a nice day!!!

Hey,

In my opinion, in the first to the fourth sentences, the incorrect thing is the present tense of their main verb that should be in past because of the adverbial word at the end of each phrase. (1. were, 2. had, 3. showed, 4. followed)
In the fifth sentence, theirs is written instead of their, and in the sixth phrase, the wrong written thing is the period shown in place of the shown period.

by for now Tünde

Dear Simon,

This is my first comment to this blog. Your explanation always helps me a lot!

>I would prefer to use "prices" instead of "cost" and the verb "fluctuate" instead of the noun "fluctuations".

In your sample answer, you used the noun "fluctuations." What is the difference between the two sentences?

Thank you!

Hi there,

Today, I came across an interesting question about the correct wording of a sentence. There are many IELTS instructors who believe that the following sentence is wrong:

"I find running is a good way to release tension."

In the Writing section of the IELTS, they say that the above sentence should be written as follows:

"I find running to be a good way to release tension."

They believe that since the word 'find' means 'feel' here, we cannot use 'that' after it. In this sense, the word 'find' is used with 'object + infinitive.'

I see no reason why 'find' in the sense of 'feel' could not be followed by a that construction. I think there is no such rule. That's odd because 'I feel that' and 'I find that' are the same as 'I think that' or 'I believe that', etc. They are extremely common, and they are correct. They aren't just something new to say. They don't always have to be followed by 'that', but there's nothing at all wrong about those word groups.

What do you think?

Thank you.

There are a lot of fluctuations in (the) cost (over a period of )these years.

Prices of both food and oil have(had) a significant(ly) increase(d) in eleven years (over a period of eleven years).

The trends show almost similar figures throughout the period.

Oil and food prices follow nearly same trends within period.

Both (prices of) goods (commodities') (prices) (had) increased theirs (their) prices throughout the period shown(not necessary)

Both goods had their prices increased throughout the period shown
