I'm not sure about Question 2. "Faraday educated himself by reading books" is true, but there is no information about "that were recommended to him by George Riebau". So finally, is it NG?

1. true
historians = experts
best experimentalist = foremost experimentalist
in the history of science = of all time

2. not given
Like Thuan Tran said, Faraday read many books, but it was not stated who recommend them, so the statement is not entirely false.

3.true
eminent = famous
subsequently = after
sent Davy a three-hundred-page book based on notes that he had taken during these lectures = he wrote a book based on the chemist's lectures

Hello sir,
I have a question. can;t we divide the writing task 2 into fewer categories as you divided the speaking cue cards.

Describe a person (family member, famous person...)
Describe a place (city, holiday...)
Describe an object (something you use, a gift...)
Describe an event (festival, celebration...)
Describe an activity (hobby, game, sport...)
Describe your favourite (book, film, website...)

can't we do something like this with the task 2 questions?

Well. i think the answer is:
False (Expert means a person with high knowledge or skill relating to a particular subject)
Not Given (He read many books)
True (Faraday subsequently sent Davy a three-hundred-page book based on notes that he had taken during these lectures. Davy's reply was immediate, kind, and favourable)

1. True - "historians of science refer to him as having been the best experimentalist in the history of science".

2. Not Given - he educated himself, read many books but it's not mentioned that those books were recommended by George Riebau.

3. False - "Faraday subsequently sent Davy a three-hundred-page book based on notes that he had taken during these lectures." So he wrote the book after the lectures, not before it.

Hi Simon and all students here. Deep thanks due to this beneficial website.
I need your advice about reading techniques. I was used to solve reading questions in a different way (Underlying key words in questions, reading a passage paragraph by paragraph and answering related questions after each paragraph. As the questions are in passage order in most cases, I found this method easy. I got 7 with this method) However, as I have learnt a different method (skim whole passage/then scan) from various websites, I am trying this but I am not successful at all. Well, honestly my comprehension increased but my score mostly is 6. I will take IELTS exam in a month. What do you think of my previous method? Is it completely futile? Should I improve new techniques or return to the previous one? Great thanks in advance.

Interesting, this post is a recycled one, from 2 years ago, I believe. You can check the answers from the archives^^

to Sevin:

There are many styles of "doing" the reading part. Personally, a combination of styles is good. You want to avoid several though because it can confuse you.

Kashish,

Yes, I've done something similar with writing task 2. Here are the question types:

http://ielts-simon.com/ielts-help-and-english-pr/2012/04/ielts-writing-task-2-question-types.html

...

Sevinj,

Your old method was the one that I recommend. I don't teach the "skimming / scanning" method, because I've seen that people often miss the answers when they skim too quickly.

Just take each question one by one, and read at normal speed, looking for keywords.

...

Well noticed Icecream! I do occasionally recycle.

Thank you so much, sir, for answering my questions.

@sevinj how do you make it? is the time sufficient in order to make this reading strategy?

Dear Mr. Simon and other friends,

Thanks for your suggestions!
I took the ielts test for the first time yesterday.
I didn't do it well!
I read that Mr. Simon suggested we could review the reading part of ielts test question books which had already done. What about listening part?
Please give me some advice, thanks!
Besides, I want to recommend Simon's ebook.
The ideas are REALLY useful not only in writing test, but also in speaking test! Every one should buy one! XD
Thank you, Mr. Simon!

Emma

A. Many experts regard Faraday as the foremost experimentalist of all time.
why it is true?
There is no info about all time.

3. Faraday came to the attention of a famous chemist after he wrote a book based on the chemist's lectures.

I think the answer is " Not Given" because there is no information provided in paragraph when he became famous..

Hello guys
Could someone please tell me why the 3rd question is a " not given" answer? Since I think that the passage mentioned that Faraday wrote a book after he attended lectures (" Faraday subsequently sent Davy a three-hundred-page book based on notes that he had taken during these lectures" )
