Hi Simon,

I've got a question about the last statement.

It is clear that the idea of "habits accounting for more than 40% of our actions" appears in the passage, but it is not the author who said it but someone else. Should we consider these quotes as "ideas expressed by the author"?

Thank you

Hi Juan,

You can ignore the fact that someone else said it - the author is passing this information on to us, so just treat the question as you normally would.

The majority =more than 50% but many is also to be more than 50%or 50i%itself nd less than 50

1. NO (Most of the choices we make are well-considered decision, but they’re not)

2. NOT GIVEN ( From the fourth paragraph we can't find this statement)

3. YES (Reason: 40 percent or more of the actions weren’t actual decisions, but habits)

Thank you.

"And though each habit means relatively little on its own..."
How common is it in formal English to start a sentence with "AND"?

N, well considered - conscious
NG
Y

1/ majority of choices = most of the choices
daily basis = each day
concious = well-considered
3/ at least 40 percent = 40 percent or more

1. The majority of choices we make on a daily basis are conscious decisions. => No
=> Most of the choices = majority of choices
=> well-considered decision making = conscious decisions
=> they're not = conscious decisions are not.
2. Saving money is the key to financial security. => Not Given
=> not mention in the passage
3. Habits account for at least 40 percent of the things we do each day. => Yes
=> 40 percent or more = at least 40 percent
=> perform = do

1. The majority of choices we make on a daily basis are conscious decisions.
-> No, they rely on the habits.
2. Saving money is the key to financial security.
-> Not given, no information about that in the reading.
3. Habits account for at least 40 percent of the things we do each day.
-> yes, the final sentence.

1. No. (In the second line we might find that 'Most of the choices we make each day may feel like the products of well-considered decision making, but they’re not.' here indication for similarity is most of the choices seems likely that they are product of our decision making but we have to look at the end of the sentence 'but they are not' which nullified the earlier sentence, so end part is important)
2. Not Given (We have no information in the text which provide us any information regarding key to financial security)
3. YES (at least 40% means 40% and above which is clearly mentioned in the text)

For the first question, I think the answer must be NG. In the second line: "Most of the choices we make each day may feel like the products of well-considered decision making, but they’re not", I have confusion between " well- considered" and "conscious". We may be conscious but not well-considered..??

I’m quite confused because I don’t get it why the second question is "not given" why can the habits be relative to financial security. For me this question is not instead of not given. If is the question relative to the information is giving to me but no just because the information is not in the text? I didn’t find any relationship between habits and financial security.
Can someone tell me why I am so confused?

Dear Simon,
When I did the reading practice of IELTS 11 Test 3, there is a question that I cannot figure out the right answer:
18. Dingle's aim is to distinguish between the migratory behaviors of different species.
The answer is FALSE, while I think it should be NOT GIVEN. Because although at the beginning of paragraph 5, it says that Dingle's definition about " migration " cites five features distinguishing migration from other forms of movement, it's still hard to say that this can be Dingle's aim. Apart from that, there is no indication about Dingle's aim.
What do you think of it? Can you give me some suggestion?
