Some people are apparently doing a scam for the ielts to be conducted on 18 August 2013 in Jalandhar. This group is going to bring about 100 students to gurgaon or Delhi next day and they will help them to do the reading writing and listening section again.big fraud...

Could be a rumour .. Who knows.?

Hi Simon,

Task2:

Some people prefer to live in a house while others feel that there are more advantages to living in an apartment.
Are there more advantages than disadvantages of living in a house compared to living in an apartment?

My Query:

For the above task,
If I agree that there are more advantages of living in a house, then,
- should I mention only advantages of house in both paragraphs
- OR should I compare the benefits of house with drawbacks of flat in both paragraphs
- OR one para with benefits of a house and other paragraph with drawbacks of a house.

Please help me how can I present this task.

Correcting third point from above query:

OR one para with benefits of a house and other paragraph with drawbacks of an apartment.

Hi Simon,

I've attended a writing class for IELTS recently. In this class, I was taught somethings that I found them weird. I really need your advice to see if these things are fine and the right ways to write an essay.

Firstly, in Task 1, I was given some complex structures to learn by heart. Does this harm my score if the examiner find out that I learn the structures? Also, I sometimes find it hard to apply the structures.

Secondly, in Task 2, is a conclusion necessary? My teacher told me that writing the conclusion is a waste of time and it can be a bad paragraph which will harm your score if there is only 1 - 2 sentences in the paragraph.

Hi simon,
I'm preparing for my ielts, so i like your site very much. It's really useful for me.
When i read your full essay task 1, i can see that you always use phrase words: "the proportion of people", or "the percentage of people". I wonder that i can write: the rate of people? Is that true?
the proportion of people = the percentage of people = the rate of people

I would like to thank you for this wonderful website
Would you please tell me how to use the words " "rate" in writing the introduction task 1..
Can i use the phrase words" the rate of elderly people" replace for " the percentage of elderly people"
Is that true?: the percentage of = the proportion of = the rate of...?
I am looking forward from you.
Thank you very much.
