"households spent seven hours a day on transporting themselves and their goods" is different from "a survey of household expenditure on transport".
The former refers to the time hoursholds spent on transporting, while the latter means the financial costs of transport.

hi simon,
which is correct, there are benefits TO getting a job OR there are benefits of getting a job?
thanks

Dear Simon, here are my answers
More PERCENTAGE of American people in 1970 than in 2000 got married.
There are many things easy enough for YOUNG people to do.
I am agreed that VOLUNTARY work can build up the responsibilities in youngs.
SOCIETIES GET benefitted as the juvenile crime rate reduced.
Having WORK EXPERIENCE may help to having a job quicker and easier.

1. More proportion of American people in 1970 than in 2000 got married.
->The proportion of American people married in 1970 was larger than that in 2000

2. There are many things easy enough for those young people to do.
-> There are many things which is (or being) easy enough for those young people to do.

3. I am agreed that volunteer work can build up the responsibilities in youngs.
-> I agree that voluntary work can build up the sense of responsibility for youth.

4. Society gets benefitted as the juvenile crime rate reduced.
-> Society obtains benefit as the juvenile crime rate reduces.

5. Having a work experience may help to having a job quicker and easier.
-> Having a work experience may help people have job more quickly and easily.

For the reading question, "households spent seven hours a day on transporting themselves and their goods" means [how much time they spent on transporting], but"a survey of household expenditure on transport" means [how much money they expend on transport].
Consequently, I don't think they are similar.

1. The proportion of American people who got married in 1970 was higher than in 2000.
2. There are many things easy enough for young people to do.
3. I agree that volunteer work can build up responsibilities in the young.
4. Society gets better as the juvenile crime rate reduces.
5. Having work experience may help people (to) get a job quickly and easily.

* The amount of time spent on transport ha s nothing to do with the amount of money on transport.

hello,simon:
my answers:

1.more should be changed into higher
2.no mistake though it is not perfect
3.I agree
4.Society gets benefit as the juvenile crime rate declines(we should not use reduce here,or we can say crime juvenile reduces)
5.having(a should be erased, because in this condition ,expreience is non-count) work experience may help getting(or to get) a job quickly and easily

in most case, expenditure is related to money .so the sentence does not mean "a survey of household expenditure on transport"? it can mean a survey of time spent on transport of household.

More proportion of American people got married in 1970 than in 2000.
There are many things enough easy for those young people to do.
I agreed that volunteer work can build up the responsibilities among youngs.
(just one 't')Society gets benefited as the juvenile crime rate reduced.

It will benefit society as juvenile crime rate is reduced.
Having a work experience may help to get a job quicker and easier.

Sorry, but by writing fast I have missed 'be' after the modal-can in the my second sentence to improve. I am not happy with that and
I do not like mistakes so once more:
There are many things which are easy enough and which may be done by those young people.
Kind regards,
Aleksandra

CORRECT ANSWERS FROM SIMON

1. A higher proportion of American people got married in 1970 than in 2000.
(problems were 'more proportion' and the position of 'got married')

2. There are many things WHICH/THAT ARE easy enough for those young people to do.
OR: Many things are easy enough...

3. I agree that volunteer work can help to teach young people about having responsibilities.
(don't write 'I am agreed' or 'youngs', and we don' really say 'build up the responsibilities')

4. Society benefits (or 'will benefit') as the juvenile crime rate falls.
(not 'gets benefitted' and not 'reduced' in the past tense)

5. Work experience may make finding a job quicker and easier.
('experience' is usually uncountable, so don't write 'having a work experience'. You can't say 'help to having')

Extra question:

The answer is NO. "Expenditure" means "money spent", but not "time spent".

Hi Meso,

If you google them, you will see that we use both.

Hi Simon,

I guess you find those mistakes in writing/essays of your students. Then you put them here. I should say that this a great work. I think some of same mistakes make by certain languages. For example, It is seen that Chinese people make same mistakes and Arabic people make other mistakes, because all of them already try to translate from their own language to English.I think it would be better teachers from every language make a list of common mistakes made by translating from origin language to English. I myself saw how my people make same mistakes through translating. It goes same for other language such as Japanese or spanish.

Good point Mh. Mistakes are almost always caused by trying to translate.

1 Higher proportion...
2 ...that are easy enough...
3 I agree...
4 ...gets benefit...
5 Having work experience...

household transport ofcourse

Hi Simon,
