Hi Simon,
I have two questions about the speaking test. You always say that candidates are expected to give short and direct answers to questions in the speaking test part 1, and I agree with you. When I was sitting the speaking test, I gave a very short and direct answer. After this, however, the examiner paused for a short while, and then started asking me questions again. Is this in fact normal? I'm worried that the examiner might think I failed to develop my answer. The below is an example.
Examiner: Do you live in a house or a flat?
Me: I live in a flat.
Examiner: (looked at me for two seconds, and then started speaking again) Em. What do ... (he started asking another question.)
In the above example, did I do something wrong that made the examiner pause? It seemed he was expecting me to speak more, but I thought I had fully answered that question.
Another question concerns the tense I used. When asked "Do you live in a flat or a house?", should I answer "I live in a flat" in order to match the tense in the question? Or I can say "I am living in a flat"?
Thanks very much, Simon!

Do you live in a house or an apartment.
My answer would be as follows.
I live in an apartment. It is a two bed rooms apartment which consists one bathroom, one kitchen and lounge room.I like to live in small apartment because it is easier to take care of this.

Hi MT,
Don't worry, I think you did the right thing. Your speaking score really depends on how well you did parts 2 and 3.
Both tenses would be fine by the way.

hi Simon,
I wrote as a answer number 8 "various". What is the difference between varies and various. Thank you so much
Posted by: ARZU | Thursday, May 24, 2012 at 16:10
Hi Arzu,
'various' is an adjective e.g. various people = several different people.
'varies' is a verb e.g. the number of people varies = the number of people can change
