Choose the correct heading for the paragraph from the list below.
A) The environmental impact of estuaries
B) The human impact on certain coastal areas
C) Why estuaries will disappear
An estuary is a partly enclosed coastal body of water with one or more rivers or streams flowing into it, and with a free connection to the open sea. Estuaries are amongst the most heavily populated areas throughout the world, with about 60% of the world’s population living along estuaries and the coast. As a result, estuaries are suffering degradation by many factors, including overgrazing and other poor farming practices; overfishing; drainage and filling of wetlands; pollutants from sewage inputs; and diking or damming for flood control or water diversion.

Hi simon,
If you have time, kindly read my writing task 1 practice test.
The table gives information about the percentage of people living in poverty according to six different categories in Australia in the year 1999.
Looking onto the chart, there were11% of Australians in all households who were financially struggling in 1999. The highest percentage of people living in poverty was seen in single parents category with about 21% accounted for 232,000 number of people while the lowest was seen in aged couple with only 4% or 48,000 number of people.
It is clear that couples with children were living in poverty more than those couples who do not have children, with about 12% (933,000) and 7% respectively. Moreover, 6% (54,000) of single aged persons were financially unstable, compared to only 4% (48,000) of aged couples.
In summary, families who have children were living in poverty more than those who do not have any children at all. Additionally, a lot of single-aged persons were struggling financially as compared to aged couples.

I'm sure 'B' is correct.
It's definitely not this paragraph that explains how much environmental impact estuaries have, and therefore 'A' is not an answer.
'C' isn't an answer because there is a huge difference between degradation and disappearance. In addition, estuaries can be described as 'certain coastal areas'.

Hi Simon,
My answer is B. The human impact on certain coastal areas.
- certain coastal areas = estuaries (An estuary is a partly enclosed coastal body of water with one or more rivers or streams flowing into it, and with a free connection to the open sea).
- The activities of human impact on estuaries (As a result, estuaries are suffering degradation by many factors, including overgrazing and other poor farming practices; overfishing; drainage and filling of wetlands; pollutants from sewage inputs; and diking or damming for flood control or water diversion).

Can we write ratio instead of rate.
Posted by: Safia | Tuesday, April 03, 2012 at 09:35
CORRECT ANSWER FROM SIMON:
B
- After "as a result" you can read a list of things that are affecting estuaries. Every factor in the list is related to human activity.
- There is nothing about the effect that estuaries have on the environment, and there is nothing about estuaries disappearing completely.
Posted by: Simon | Tuesday, April 03, 2012 at 11:32
Hi Maysoon,
I'll try to cover that topic in a future lesson. My quick tip is to say that universities should do both things. Then you can write a paragraph about each.
...
Hi Safia,
'Ratio' isn't the same as 'rate', so don't use it as a synonym.

Dear Simon,
I'm writing to you because I cannot figure out why the answer to the question on a passage I worked on yesterday is FALSE.
The passage says: even news reports were neither clearly factual nor clearly fictional: our own sharp discriminations between these categories simply did not apply.
The question says: It was impossible to distinguish fact from fiction in late sixteenth-century news reports.
Maybe the question is false because there was not a prior, clear and conscious difference between "fact" and "fiction"?
Thanks a lot for your help.

Hi Domenico,
That confuses me too! My guess is that it's not from an official Cambridge book - sometimes questions in other books are badly written (occasionally, but rarely, this is the case in Cambridge books too).
