hi, simon.
Could you provide use the most used synoynms in writings task 2? For example, when the topic is about children i fed up using the word "children" over and over. Will it affect my score? Or I should find a way to avoid repeating this word? Moreover, when topic is about spending or under-developed countries we use excess number of same words.

Hi Anar,
I'm afraid I don't have a list like that. Often there are no direct synonyms (e.g. for 'children') but you can find other ways to express the idea (e.g. young people, younger generations, teenagers etc.)

in the Given time for reading the questions should i read the answers or just the questions ?
Posted by: Mohammad | Sunday, February 12, 2012 at 00:50
Hi Leila,
This is normal I'm afraid. If nobody made mistakes, the exam would be too easy. Just keep practising and you will improve.
...
Hi Mohammad,
Try to read the questions AND the answer choices.

Hi dear Simon;
I would be grateful if you could answer my question.
In Test 2 of the CAMBRIDGE IELTS 8 there is a question about a date of an event. The relating phrase written in the tapescript is "28th of November", but the answer mentioned in the answer keys is "28 November", and it is mentioned that "No more than three words …". All of us know that we have no right to change the words, and add/remove something to them. So, what should we do? Should we write the "th" or "th of", or not?
Thanks a lot;
Shayan

Hi Shayan,
All ways of writing dates are accepted, so '28th of' is fine.

For questions like the second one where you are asked to choose what the speaker did NOT say, I find it easier to take the opposite approach. I would mark the answers that the speaker DID say, and then circle the other ones as the correct answer.
I think it's easier to recall, from short term memory, what someone DID say than what they did NOT say.

Excellent advice Jean-Luc. That's what I would do too!

Hi Tanveera,
I'm afraid there is no special advice that I can give you that isn't already in the lessons here on the site. All I can say is that you need to be patient and keep practising - your frustrations are very common among IELTS students, most of whom find the reading test difficult. Keep working hard and you will improve!
