Hi simon,

just have an urgent question to ask.
is it alright to use 'one' or 'ones' in task 2??

for example, i wrote ; For this reason, it is undoubtable that one would be more attracted to a company which offers relatively higher salary and remuneration benefits.

my IELTS teacher says it seems inappropriate to use these words in task 2 essays. what is your opinion?

Hi Simon,
I'd be glad if you answered my simple question!
How should I write numbers (for example 45 or 100) in general ielts writing tasks? Should I speel them out or I can write them with numbers?
Thank you!
Alex from Russia

Hi Jay,

It's grammatically correct, so it would be fine. However, personally I wouldn't use "one" because I'd prefer to use "people who are looking for work" or "employees" or "jobseekers".

...

Hi Alex,

I think it's fine to write the figure.

Hi Simon this is my introduction
please comment me
thx

People have different view about amount of money paid to sportsperson. While there are some good arguments in favour of justified the salaries paid to them. I believe that it is reasonable to pay certain amount to athletic person.

Due to constant media attention, sports professionals have become stars and celebrities and have paid hefty amount. However,i also agree that it is fully justified.
Firstly, sports salaries are not determined by considering the vital services they are providing to the society rather it is the reflection of popularity of the sport in general and public support that successful stars can generate.foreg,Sachin Tendulkar is known to be an image of God in cricket world and he earned so much name and fame because of the popularity of his game and people loves watching him.On the contrary, any player who is not popular yet doesnot seems to earn more as number of professionals with real talent are very few and money is just a recognisation of that talent and amount of hardwork they put to become successful.for eg,Lionel Messi of barcelona football team is known to be the biggest footballer of his generation and he has got the real talent same with R.Nadal top tennis player.
secondly, competition is constant and each player has to perform to his very best in relatively short career and in that short span of time they might have gone through various surgries and other accidents just to prove their capability and worth.
thirdly, the pressure from media is so constant and intense that they have very little privacy out of spotlight.most of their time is being spent on touring and playing that they hardly get some gala time to spent with their families and friends.
So all these above stated factors justify huge salaries and indicates society also places more value of sports.

Hi Simon this is my responce to this task
please make comment thanks a lot

People have different view about the amount of money paid to sportsperson. While there are some good arguments in favour of justified the salaries paid to them. I believe that it is reasonable to pay certain amount to athletic person.

On the one hand, some people believe that sportsperson has significant less involvement with society compare to other people like doctors and scientists. Moreover, they also argue that doctors and well know scientist invent precious medicines which would beneficial for everyone in society for instance. This example make clear that money paid to sportsperson is too much compare to their contribution in society than other professionals. Hence, it is unfair to pay that much money to athletic person for their performance in just sports games.

On the other hand, advocates think that sports are big business and it provides employment to others. In addition, they believe that it is not unusual for sportspeople to make donation campaign for health foundation or natural calamity such as flood and cyclone for example. When look at this illustration it is clear that sportsperson are part of our community and they help society as much they can in many ways. Thus it is clear that salaries paid to those sportsmen and women should be justified.

In conclusion, it certain that other professional services like doctors and scientists has considerable contribution in society. However, money paid to professional sports people could create more jobs for other people in society. Hence, salaries paid to them should be acceptable.

In today’s modern world where sports is an integral part every society, talking about sport-stars live in general and the amount of their income in particular should come as no surprise. If the high payment that is common these days can benefit a nation in one way or another, why should not be paid. At the same time, it cannot be denied that because of this, those who given low salary despite playing crucial roles in a country’s development are discouraged.

The fact is that professional sportspeople bring reputation to a country. This is leading to provision of job opportunities, which not only simply provides preoccupation but also facilitates building of infrastructures in a country. When a place is popular in a sport like football, can attract visitors and fans of this play that can boost tourism industry, which is a source of income in addition to accelerate roads building or telecommunication services.

It is extremely important that sportsmen are not paid high salary so other vital sectors’ experts are not disappointed so their active participation in a country development is maintained. Given that, the role of experts of other sectors such as health and education is incredibly vital in a society. The efforts of a doctor who serve day and night rescuing lives of thousands of people, or a teacher, who directly take part in development, cannot be compared to that of the sportsman.

From what has been discussed, the high payment to sport stars is simply justified for the role they play in financial growth of a country, but it can cost reduction in productivity of other experts. In my opinion, equally payment to the exceptionally well-done job can guarantee the harmonious development of a society.

Hi Ahmad,

I'm afraid I can't comment on essays, but thanks for sharing your ideas.

Hi Simon,

Your ideas are really useful, but I am not sure how to write paragraphs with these ideas. It is not easy to expand on them. Do you have any suggestion?

Thank you veru much!

Some people believe that the salaries paid to professional sportspeople are too high, while others argue that sports salaries are fair.
Discuss both views and give your opinion.

The amount of money some sportsmen are earning is creating a filling of unfairness in some group, while others argue , it is what they deserve.

The group who do feel that it is fair are putting their point forward to indicate how much the star-player sweats to generate attraction in the sport. Sportsmen and women must practice a lot to put the skill at their foot tip or at their finger tip. take Rooney a player in Manchester United football team who is spectacular, is suffering from extensive media scrutiny , constantly under spotlight, and he is one of the rare species in the field .Hence, he is a prominent example to benefit from the money he is generating.

Indeed, others do have sufficient reason to doubt or call it unfair the sportsmen and women are earning in the face of poor payment to world class engineers and astrophysicist . This professionals are vey important to society, community and the world at large. Take teachers , nurses and doctors as an example. Their contribution to society they live in is astronomical - the society can not live without them. Hence, it is unfair for this important professionals to earn less than a footballer whose job is only to kick a football- the world can live without them.
I personally think , we are living in a capitalistic world governed by the laissez- faire attitude towards free-market . the law of demand and supply makes or breaks price .
In conclusion, we should have to accommodate the world of both , because when there are good number of professional players they create job and become a good ambassador of their country like David Becham. Nevertheless, other professionals who are impacting the society in a very positive way must be rewarded proportionally by a responsible body by all available means.

Hi Simon,
I try to follow your ideas and add some linking words

On the one hand, it can be argued that professional sport salaries are too high. Firstly, although they do not provide a vital service, sports professionals earn too much money. Football players, for example, receive enormous salaries by simply kicking a ball. In fact, we could all live happily without professional football; however, life would be difficult without doctors, engineers and other vital professionals which society does not seem to value as highly as professional sport. At present, the average salaries of teachers are greatly lower than professional athletes, while their role is much more important in society. Therefore, in my view, sports salaries should be compatible with the wages most people can earn.

Nowadays the sports remunerations have been debated by many people. Some of them agree that sports professionals deserve their high salaries, however many others argue that they overwhelmingly receive a substantial amount of money.

It is believed by many people that a high wedge paid to professional sports people is justifiable, since they have contributed immensely to their community. A footballer is an example of some, when he pays a significant amount of an income to a tax system in a country. In other wards, he could be regarded as an important source of income to a national budget What is more, sports and sportspeople can draw many companies and sponsors to subsidies many athletic events, which can employ many people, hence more money would be poured into the economy. Besides being a source of income, professional sportspeople also regarded as an entertainment for many, because people spend money to watch and enjoy sport events in their leisure time, especially those events included well known names or internationally important.

However, those who believe it is unfair for athletes to be paid high salaries have their convincing reasons. One reason is they do not do vital jobs compared to other competences, for example a nurse who works at least 10 hours per day serving patients and sometimes could save life, as against to a tennis player who plays for two hours with a payment of at least three time than that for a nurse. Consequently a feeling of discrimination would be escalated between people. As well as, people can also live their life happily without professional in sports. This means they might spend their free time, reading, watching T.V, or even doing sports that they like rather than watching others playing them. Therefore, an effect of the highly paid athletes would fade gradually and their high remunerations will be probably decreased dramatically to equal other disciplines.

All in all, from what has been discussed, athletes play some role in economy and entertainment; nevertheless I strongly take the view that their salaries are unjustifiable.

In this modern world , sports can be as meaningful as a career for someone who is excellent in playing nationally or internationally. There are controversial debates between people- one group of people believe that the salaries paid to sportsmen or women are fair and reasonable while others believe that salaries of these professionals are too high. In this essay I will examine both sides and my opinion.
It can not be denied the contribution of athletes to society financially , globally and leisurely . Take Rooney who is a football player in Manchester United team as an example model in terms of finance. Although he has become a Millionaire due to his substantial salary since his performance in the team attracts a wide range of people from different countries .people may travel from abroad to Manchester in the UK at old Trafford stadium to see this athlete . This lead to flourishing tourist industry because of the proceeds that have been generated by hotels restaurants and amusements.

However, others believe that the roles of people in careers other than sports are more significant and vital than athletes because some of these careers have a positive impact on health, education and economy. For example, no body can deny our reliance to the people who work in health sectors-thousands of lives are saved hourly by doctors and paramedics . It is illogical to award sportsmen and ignore scientists.

Although I am against the high salaries to athletes, I think there is no logical reason to be considered to minimize the huge salaries given to athletes because these athletes are supported by big companies who generate huge amount of money by these athletes.

To conclude, athletes who earn high salaries play an important role in improving the image of their countries. Nevertheless, scientists ‘contribution to society are more beneficial than athletes.

Dear Ahmad,
I mad some correction to your essa, find it bellow:

If they can benefit a nation in one way or another, why should not be highly rewarded. At the same time, it cannot be denied that because of this, those who are paid low salary despite playing crucial roles in a country’s development, are discouraged.

It is extremely important that other vital sectors’ experts are rewarded more than sportsmen and women since their active participation in a country development is exceptionally vital. Given that, the role of experts of sectors such as health and education is incredibly essential in a society. In my opinion, equally payment to the exceptionally well-done job can guarantee the harmonious development of a society.

Salaries paid for various professions are differ from each other by amount. There are different views among people regarding sport salaries earn by athletes rather than other professionals. To my point of view,It is unreasonable to donate enormous salaries for sport persons.

It is acceptable that sport people have not get their reputation in overnight. There is no any miracle being a well-known sporting star beside a great consecration to the sport field.Through a untiring effort they have reached the top with self esteem.Although they are not performing a vital role in the society ,It is undeniable that they support the community by alleviating poverty through development programmes in rural areas and opening up doors to more investments, fostering blooming tourist industry.Nevertheless sports people help to equalize gender gap that has rootrd deeply in the society. They confirm the international integration across territorial boundaries which makes global connectivity stable.Their time, physical effort can not be underesimated but also they show off their mental wealth to the society being sound "role models";The most bankable sporting stars can be found in foot ball field.

On the other hand,It is unfair to pay copious salaries for them because of neglegence of other skilled professionals who are having the vital place on the society such as educational and health professionals. It is claimed that, from the televised games or events they draws influx of money. Not only they attracts much more viewers but also they attract much of material wealth from organisations which can spend for poverty alleviation programmes or development programmes instead of .A good illustration of this over popularity is given for sport persons by the mass media even there are most pressing concerns like world hunger global warming all over the world.Compared to the athletes ,teachers ,nurses, doctors and scientists play a crucial role in shaping up people mentally and physically.Sport women and sport men should be paid less than that of skilled professionals.Although they are not getting salaries in daily basis their income for a short period exceed the salary earn by other professionals throughout their service. It seems to be illogical to treat the skilled professionals who have gone through difficult stages of their learning process to achieve their target with tremoundous effort. We could step up national strategies for development programmes injecting this much of money instead of donating sport people.

To sum up,I thouroughly believe sport persons are not treated with enormous salaries compared to other skilled professionals.

Hi Simon,
Is it ok to write: " a sports career may only last 10 years compared to 30-40 years of other professionals"
Thanks

Hi Ngan,

Yes, but I'd write "for other professionals".

...

Thanks for sharing your essays. I think you can learn a lot from reading other students' work.

hi Simon i am tom from India and I've been using ur website for the last two weeks.
today i saw a writing topic but i didnt get any idea at all..the qstn was
Nowadays more people are choosing to live with friends or alone rather than with their families. This trend is likely to have a negative impact on communities. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion.
Could you please help me in finding some ideas about this topic

Hi Tom,

Good question. I'll try to use it for a lesson on the site as soon as I can.

Many people thought that talented players should not be paid huge monthly salaries by the authorities, while other beleieve that sports men deserve to be paid a handsome amount. This essay will look upon the arguments for and against the high salaries of competent players.

On one hand, people beleive that the players have less contribution in development and progress of a society. They firmly beleive that the persons linked with other professions like teaching, medicine, engineering play a great role in country's development. For example,a Football player earns enormous salary by simply kicking a ball.Governments allocate a huge budget for the promotion of sports. This money should be on the other sites. We could all live happily without professional players, but it is miserable to even think of living without a doctor or an engineer.

The people in favour of the handsome amonut of the athelethes beleive that a sports man has a very short time to remain in lime light and to earn money. The maximum retirement age of a player is 40 years.Being a top player requires hours of practice. So they do not have time to sort out other ways of earning income.Another point is that if a sports man is famous than he would be paid a huge amount by many advertising companies. Many popular and top sports persons are the brand ambassdor of different companies. On the other handif the player is not popular he has only his monthly salary. So it is quite possible that he might look for unfair means to earn extra money. So
they should be paid a handsome amount by the governments so that they could manage their life.
In my opinion, players are the impotant part of our community.Although they play less significant role in the nation's progress as compare to other highly skilled people. But they play for the honour and pride of their nation so they should be given high respect and honour.

please correct my mistakes and band my essay.

thank you simon

Hi Jiya,

I'm afraid I don't offer essay correction and scoring. If I did this, everyone would send me there essays. Try to find a teacher who can help you face-to-face.

Hi Simon,
Regarding these your ideas, I was wondering that which of them is used to give the ideas, explain in detail or give a example???
Thanks a million!

Hi Dung,

The sentences above are really 'explaining'.

The 'view' above the bullet points is the main idea, and the bullet points explain the idea in detail. I haven't given any examples in this lesson.

Dear Mr Simon!
I have come back from my holiday in Hong Kong and I'm so sory because I cannot reply soon!
I mean with other your ideas such as:
"Would you be able to discuss the advantages and disadvantages of genetic engineering? Here are some ideas from my ebook:
- Genetic engineering is the practice of manipulating the genes of an organism.
- It is used to produce crops that are more resistant to insects and diseases.
- Some genetically modified crops grow more quickly.
- Some drugs and vaccines are produced by genetic engineering.
- It may become possible to change a person's genetic characteristics.
- Scientists may use genetic engineering to cure diseases.
- Inherited illnesses would no longer exist.
- Genes could be changed before a baby is born.
- It could also be possible to clone human organs.
- We could have replacement body parts.
- Humans could live longer, healthier lives.
As you can see, I've only listed the advantages. Can you think of any disadvantages "
which of the ideas above is used to give the ideas, explain in detail or give a example???
Thanks so much!!!

Hi Dung,

The "idea" is very general: advantages of genetic engineering.

All of the other sentences "explain" the advantages of genetic engineering. Some of them are examples of uses of genetic engineering: crops, drugs, vaccines, cures for diseases.

Remember that the "idea" is always the general idea for the paragraph e.g. 'advantages'. Everything else is explaining, and examples are a good way to support you explanations.

okje, got it, thanks my lovely teacher!!!

It is true that successful professional athletes earn more than those in other professions. While it can be argued this is unfair for non-sports people, I believe it is justifiable for those successful athletes.

On the one hand, it is not fair for professionals like engineers and doctors to earn less than athletes for many reasons.Firstly, everybody gets sick and requires medical assistance.People cannot live without a doctor and care less about people who make money by simply shooting or kicking a ball . Thus, physicians are truly important. Secondly, engineers are also needed in countries that seek improvements in their infrastructures. They can attract more investors to build huge industries. Therefore, there comes an increase revenue. More importantly, the lives of people lie in their hands because if a doctor makes a mistake in performing a surgical procedure, it could kill a patient. Also, if an engineer building a bridge provides a weak structural foundation, it might collapse and lead to the loss of human lives.

On the other hand, there are reasons why sports superstars receive a considerable amount of salary. One is that it requires a lot of practice to become a professional player like those in National hockey league. Many people aspire to play in a professional field but only few are chosen. Another is that big companies are willing to pay them to advertise their products. As a result, it provides job opportunities for people who work in the field of sports such as personal assistants, coaches and sports' hosts.

In conclusion, although other professionals like doctors and engineers are significant in our country, I still completely agree that it is justifiable for successful and great sports people to make more money than them.

Nowadays, sports professionals get tremendously high wages compared to people with regular jobs. Although some people think that they are overpaid, I contest that athletes deserve the earnest amount of compensation
Athletes earn enormous amount of money just by playing in a particular sport, yet they do not provide essential services to the general public. For example, a professional basketball player earns more money than professionals who are very vital to the community such as doctors, nurses and engineers. It is a fact that the community will still function well despite the absence of such sports. It is also true that most of these sports involve gambling, which is bad for some people.
However, these sportspeople do not only have natural talent but they also trained and worked hard to develop the skills that they possess. Athletes are exposed to excessive amounts of physical stress, furthermore seasonal sports such as basketball and football require athletes to travel a lot, and hence they will be away from their loved ones for several days throughout the season. There are also some risks involved in sports such as injuries and long term health effects. For example, basketball players often get fractures and boxers often develop Alzheimer’s disease when they grow old. Sportspeople do not only provide us with entertainment but they also inspire other people. Furthermore, they display some desirable traits such as competition and sportsmanship which is good for young people to follow.
In spite the fact that athletes are compensated with enormously higher amounts compared to other professionals, I still believe that it is just fair.

I know simon cant comment or correct on our essays. others please correct mine.

p.s : thanks a lot simon. your website helped me so much and i know it also helped many others. God bless you brotha!
