The pie chart illustrates the consumption of electricity in an ordinary English home.
It is clear that heating system uses the largest amount of electricity in comparison to other household appliances.
The largest proportion of energy/electricity which is approximately 52.5 percent,in an average British home is used for heating rooms and water, and is literally more than half of the total electricity shown in the pie chart.Where as,17.5 percent of it is used for kitchen devices such as,ovens, kettles and washing machines. It is almost three times less than that is used by central heatings.
Last but not the least, the remaining 30 percent of electricity is used by minor appliances, forexample, television, radio, lighting;rating 15percent and the rest is consumed by vaccum cleaners, food mixers, electric tools and so on.The amount of electricity used by minor devices is four times less then the electricity used by central heating system.
Hello Simon, can I use the word 'energy' instead of electricity here?
Also can you please write some sentences comparing the proportions of energy used by various appliances here because you know, I think mine is not that appropriate.
Thank-x

The pie chart illustrates a typical average usage of electricity in an ordinary English home.
The largest amount of energy which is 52.5% is used on heating rooms and water. The reason why over half of the electricity is used in heating, is because of the irregular change in British weather. In comparison to others European countries where their weather in summer raised above 25 degree Celsius, the UK weather bearing passed above 20 degree. Therefore, other countries use least electricity than any normal house in summer.
The second biggest usage of typical British electricity is on kitchen appliances such as ovens, kettles and washing machines, account for 17.5% of household energy.
Half of the remaining 30% of electricity is used on the most essential appliances such as lighting of the whole house, television to our entertainment and radios to listening to music, which are part of our day to day life. The other half of the 30% of energy is used on appliances like vacuum cleaners, food mixers and electric tools are used on a weekly basic.
Hello Simon, could you give me some tips on how I could improve my writing skills. I will appreciate if you can give me a feedback on this task.
Thank you

Kitchen appliances facilities , namely ovens, kettles and washing machines, account for 17.5% of household electricity use .

Hi Rey,
Have a look at the lesson below - it contains links to essays for 2 charts or more.
http://ielts-simon.com/ielts-help-and-english-pr/2011/01/ielts-writing-task-1-more-than-one-chart.html
You may lose some points if you don't mention all parts of the question (speaking part 2). However, if what you said was really good, missing one part of the question won't have a bad effect.
...
Hi Maya,
There is no need to use "energy", but it's fine if you want to use it. Your sentences are fine!
...
Hi Alice,
The ebook only contains ideas (good vocabulary written in full sentences) for writing task 2, not for reading. There is an example chapter on the "Simon's ebook" page - see the menu on the left of this website.
I wouldn't write "decide citizens' life" - see my corrected conclusion below:
In conclusion, for the reasons mentioned above, I strongly believe that governments have no right to MAKE DECISIONS about citizens' lives, except WHEN it is about their health.

Hi Alima,
All of my best tips are already here in the lessons on this site. I'm afraid I can't give individual help with writing - try to find a teacher or native speaker who can check your work.

Hi Esmaeil,
I'm afraid I won't be able to do a lesson on that for a few weeks - I've had too many other requests. I'll try to use it soon.

Hello Simon,
Talking about writing task 1, I have been wondering if it is necessary to write concluding paragraph. I know it makes my writing more structured but just not comfortable repeating what I have already written above. Writing conclusion would benefit my overall writing score?
Thank you :)

Hello Simon,
I want to ask you about the sentence in the book that I read it write: "The pie chart, combined with the table, give past and data future concerning worldwide carbon dioxide emission". But my English teacher corrected a mistake in a noun phrase, he suppose : "worldwide carbon dioxide emissions"
I really appreciate your help.
Thanks!
Posted by: Anh Tuan | Thursday, April 14, 2011 at 08:36
Hi Anh,
I agree with your teacher. Also, it should be "future data", not "data future".

Simon you said Ok for MAya but
The largest proportion of energy/electricity which is approximately 52.5 percent,in an average British home is used for heating rooms and water, and is literally more than half of the total electricity shown in the pie chart.
in this paragraph,in first line, I think he/she have to say electricity consumption or usage of electricity. Am I right?

Hi idil,
I think it's ok because it says "is used" in line 2 (i.e. electricity is used...)

The pie chart shows information about the different uses of electricity in an average English household.
It is clear from the pie chart that just over half of the electricity consumed by English households is used for heating rooms and water throughout the year.
In an average English home, the largest proportion of electricity, which makes up 52.5%, is used for heating rooms and water and is just over double the amount of total electricity shown in the pie chart. Three kitchen appliances, namely ovens, kettles and washing machines, account for 17.5% of household electricity use. This is the second largest proportion of electricity and three times less than the percentage of electricity consumed by English households for heating rooms and water.
The last two compounds in the chart share equal proportions of the remaining electricity. Half of the remaining 30% of electricity is used for lighting, televisions and radios, and the other half (15%) is applied for vacuum cleaners, food mixers and electric tools.

Hi Simon,
Could i write "the proportion of electricity use for heating rooms and heating water is three times as much electricity use, compared to 17.5% used for ovens, kettles and washing machines"?
Thank you in advance.
Posted by: UT | Friday, February 10, 2012 at 07:44
Hi UT,
No, you can't add 'compared to 17.5%' in that way. The only way to add it in that sentence is to put 17.5% in brackets after 'electricity use'.
Posted by: Simon | Friday, February 10, 2012 at 10:55
hi Simon, can use tell me the different of use(noun) and usage.
For instance, CAN i say the electricity use or electricity usage
Posted by: Mario | Sunday, May 13, 2012 at 08:45
Hi Simon,
Can I replace the last sentence
[the remaining 30% "is used for"...]with
[the remaining 30% "is accounted for by"]?
If it's OK, would it get a lower mark after replacing it.
Thank you.
