Hi
An important festival in my country would be Norooz which is the first day of the year and also the first day of spring .It is very important for us because of many things: first ,it is inseparable part of our culture .second ,because of the long holidy in this time ,people have the chance to clean their home ,pay a visit to elderlies and above all go to holiday and escape from the exhusted days of working. In addition ,everywhere is green ,the blossom on the trees ,the sound of the rivers and singing of the birds can enchant every viewer and take you to another dimention .I like this festival because it brings me happiness.

Good preparation Soodabeh.

Hi Simon,

How many uncommon word do I have to say to get 8 or 9 in speaking ?

David Park, an IELTS examiner, says that a dozen of uncommon words are enough to get 7

Many thanks

Hi Simon,

Can you explore and elaborate the difference between band score 8 and 9 in term of fluency, lexical resources, grammar, and pronunciation
based on the following guideline ?
http://www.ielts.org/pdf/UOBDs_SpeakingFinal.pdf

Hi Hore boy,

It's not an exact science because it also depends on whether you use the 'less common words/phrases' correctly and in a natural way. I've seen an official IELTS video in which a student only uses 3 or 4 less common phrases and still gets a 7 because he speaks in a fluent, natural way.

The difference between 8 and 9 is quite small, but you can see in the descriptors for band 8 that the student can make some small mistakes in each area: look for the words "occasional inaccuracies", "occasional inappropriacies" or "hesitation to search for language". A band 9 student would speak fluently and naturally, and the only mistakes would be those that a native speaker might make.

hi simon
how i hear you very well
could you check these sentences is useful also correct

1.Hello. Could you show me your identification card please?
Hello. Sure, here you are.

2. Could you tell me your full name please?
My full name is XXX. I am also called by my English name, which is XXX.

3. What shall I call you?
You could call me XXX.

4. How are you?
I am well thank you, and yourself?

5. How old are you?
I am 22 years old. In other words, I was born in 1980. On the eight of March 1980, to be exact.

6. Does your name have any special meaning? ( 5 - 6 )
Yes, my name does have some special meaning. My family name means peace, and my first name means strong one. My English name was given to me by one of my high school teachers, and it does not have any special meaning really.

6. Does your name have any special meaning? ( 7 - 8 )
I presume you are referring to my Chinese name. Yes, the English equivalent of my family name would be something like peace, and in the case of my first name it would be strong one. My English name was randomly chosen by one of my high school teachers, and it really doesnt have any special meaning.

7. Is your name important to you? ( 5 - 6 )
No. I dont think it can do anything for me. I believe a person has to work out his own life. I am planning to do this as well as I can.

7. Is your name important to you? ( 7 - 8 )
Not really. I am part of the new generation who do not attach too much significance to our names. Names were important to the older generation as they of the opinion that it will determine your destiny to some extent. However, I personally believe that I myself will determine my destiny irrespective of what my name is. I will do this by acquiring good qualifications and by working hard.

my best regards
alqnas

Hi Alqnas,

Your answers are good. The only thing I disagree with is the band scores next to each answer. These are part 1 questions, so answers should be short and direct. I personally prefer your 'band 5-6' answers (I think you could get a much higher score than 5-6 with those answers IF your part 2 and 3 answers are good).

I've never met a student who was able to give answers like your 'band 7-8' responses. They seem "too perfect" to me, and I wonder why you don't think they are good enough for band 9.

Remember that part 1 is supposed to be easy. You can't get a high score without doing well in parts 2 and 3.

I am going to describe about Sankranthi Festival which is the Biggest of all Hindu festival's in India.

Usually the festival celebrated for 4 days.

1st day- Bogi
2nd Day-Sankranthi.
3rd day-Kanuma.
4th day-Mukkanuma.

On the first day, people used to discard old things and concentrate on new things causing change. People fire the old furniture, logs of wood and other solid fuels in streets and boils the water in that fire and they bath with that water.

When it comes to 2nd day, Its the main day of festival where people wear new clothes and prepare some sweets etc. All family members gather at their home for this festival including the sisters who were already married come to native along with their husbands and children.

On 3rd day people used to enjoy some delicious food which includes non-veg like meat or chicken. In some areas social organizations conduct stat level games to deviate people from betting competitions.

Finally 4th day people eat delicious food prepared by their mom together in their home
and at evening people departs to their working towns.

Hi Simon,
Today is the Tet day in my country. Below is my preparation:

Tet is a big annual holiday in Vietnam that celebrates the arrival of spring based on the Vietnamese calendar. It usually lasts for 7 days.

Popular customs of the holiday include visiting relatives, friends and temples, ancestral worshipping, wishing New Year's greetings, giving lucky money to children and elderly people, and opening a shop. In addition, some return to worship at the family altar or visit the graves of their ancestors in their homeland.

Over the Tet period, people decorate their homes and exchange gifts. People also try to pay all their pending debts and resolve all the arguments among colleagues, friends or members of family. Tet is the period of highest annual temple attendance.

Special Tet food is an important part of the celebration. Some cuisine is also eaten year-round, while other dishes are only eaten during Tết. A standard Tet meal includes Chưng cake, a well-preserved traditional Vietnamese rice cake, sticky rice, meat stewed, boiled chicken, pickled vegetables, Vietnamese sausage, followed by candied fruits and roasted seeds.

Some materials about the Spring Festival:

The Spring Festival is the most important festival for the Chinese people and is when all family members get together, just like Christmas in the West. It is also known as 'Chinese New Year' in the world.

Within China, regional customs and traditions concerning the celebration of the Chinese new year vary widely. Often, the evening preceding Chinese New Year's Day is an occasion for Chinese families to gather for the annual reunion dinner.

It is also traditional for every family to thoroughly cleanse the house, in order to sweep away any ill-fortune and to make way for good incoming luck. Windows and doors will be decorated with red color paper-cuts and couplets with popular themes of "good fortune" or "happiness", "wealth", and "longevity." Other activities include lighting firecrackers and giving money in red paper envelopes.

The 23rd day of the 12th lunar month is called Preliminary Eve. At this time, people offer sacrifice to the kitchen god. Now however, most families make delicious food to enjoy themselves.

Store owners are busy then as everybody goes out to purchase necessities for the New Year. Materials not only include edible oil, rice, flour, chicken, duck, fish and meat, but also fruit, candies and kinds of nuts. What's more, various decorations, new clothes and shoes for the children as well as gifts for the elderly, friends and relatives, are all on the list of purchasing.

Before the New Year comes, the people completely clean the indoors and outdoors of their homes as well as their clothes, bedclothes.

A series of activities such as lion dancing, dragon lantern dancing, lantern festivals and temple fairs will be held for days. The Spring Festival then comes to an end when the Lantern Festival is finished.
